What to do about a Car Insurance Claim?

TopCheck is happy to forward your claims to the respective insurance companies in case of an accident.
Having some type of vehicle insurance is not only mandatory, but it can actually turn out very convenient if some misfortune happens to your ride. If your car is covered (and it should be!), getting a fair compensation from your insurance company shouldn't be a pain in the knee. Below are some tips that will help you feel more comfortable with making a claim.

1 When should you make a claim?

There are three situations where you are entitled to a reimbursement:

  • Partial Accident Claim.  You had an accident and your car is partially damaged.
  • Total Loss Claim.  You had an accident and your car won't ride again.
  • Theft Claim.  Your car was stolen.

Keep in mind that a Comprehensive Plan is the only plan that covers all types of claims. If you opt for a third party only plan, it will simply cover partial accident claims. In between, there's the option for for a third party theft & fire plan. You can learn more about the different types of plans here.

2 How can you make a claim?

If you bought your Insurance policy through a broker or agent, you should contact him directly and he will help you through the process. If you bought your policy directly with the insurance company, you should contact your company. You can see the contact numbers of the different insurance companies here. They will send you a claim form that sometimes can also be downloaded from their website and a request for additional documents.

3 What documents will you need when making a claim?

Depending on the type of claim, you will need to provide different documents. Please check the list below for further details:

Partial Accident Claim
  • Completed Claim Form
  • Interim Police Report (for lone accident it is dispensable)
  • Photos of damaged vehicle
  • Handwritten statement of the driver
Total Loss Claim
  • Completed Claim Form
  • Interim Police Report
  • Photos of damaged vehicle
  • Insurance Certificate
  • Insurance Policy
  • Proof of Ownership
  • Spare Keys
  • Vehicle License
  • Letter of Authority
Theft Claim
  • Completed Claim Form
  • Interim Police Report (first report)
  • Final Police Report (at least 3 months later - the minimum time to search for the car)
  • Insurance Certificate
  • Insurance Policy
  • Proof of Ownership
  • Spare Keys

4 Why should you make a claim?

If some day you have to make a claim (and we hope this day never comes) you are entitled to receive a reimbursement in the form of money from your insurance company. After you completed the steps mentioned above, the insurance company will analyze your case and suggest you a settlement offer (also known as "discharged voucher") where they communicate how much they are willing to pay you. You should be aware that you can negotiate this amount and if you are not happy with it you can always change insurance company next year. You can use this argument as a bargaining tool.

Getting money from your insurance company should not be a nightmare and if you read this article you're already better qualified to get a fairer compensation next time something happens to your vehicle. Having an insurance plan has benefits that you can and should make use of. If you don't have car insurance or you're not happy with your current one, you can compare and know more about the different offers in the market here: topcheck.com.ng. Remember, car insurance is mandatory so you should make the best out of it.
